Koehler had last appeared in the majors in 2017 due to a right shoulder injury that bothered him over the past two seasons. The right-hander had been working in the Pirates' camp during spring training, but he'll opt to hang up his cleats rather than continuing to compete for a spot on a major-league pitching staff. Koehler finishes his career with a 4.39 ERA, 604 strikeouts and 36 wins over six seasons in the majors with the Marlins and Blue Jays.

Koehler's days as a major-league starter are likely over and that's probably a good thing for his career. A move to the bullpen with Toronto last season, after being unceremoniously dumped by Miami, gave Koehler new life. While he pitched just 12 innings out of the bullpen down the stretch, he had an 11:3 K:BB and 3.16 FIP in those 12 frames -- good enough to earn Koehler a one-year, major-league contract with the Dodgers in the offseason. He gained a tick of velocity on his fastball while working in shorter spurts and he threw his curveball more after the move (going from 18.8 percent with the Marlins to 30.5 percent with Toronto). What resulted was more swings at pitches out of the strike zone and more groundballs. There is hope that Koehler will continue to improve with the help of the Dodgers' analytics department, which is among the best in baseball.

Koehler went 9-13 with a 4.33 ERA for the Marlins in 2016, roughly in line with his career marks (35-48, 4.16 ERA). He has never displayed great control and 2016 was no exception: he walked 83 batters, fourth most in the majors. Koehler's fastball clocks in around 92 mph without much movement, so he relies heavily on his breaking balls, throwing offspeed 53 percent of the time last year, up from 42 percent in 2015 and 40 percent in 2014. It's easy to understand why, as opponents put up a .953 OPS against his fastball in 2016. The Marlins don't have much in the way of starting pitching depth, so Koehler should be in line for another full season of starts in 2017 despite his mediocrity. At age 30, his declining fastball usage and effectiveness should give fantasy owners some concern when considering Koehler, especially given his poor command.

There is very little to get excited about with Koehler, but over the last two years he's established himself as a league-average MLB starter. Koehler is prone to fits of control issues and does not miss a lot of bats, but generates groundballs at an above-average clip, a skill which allowed him to post a 3.29 ERA at Marlins Park last season. He had an ERA over 4.00 in just two of the season's six months, and is in the same division as the lowly Braves and Phillies, but hard contact has been generated on nearly a third of the batted balls against Koehler in his career. Thus, it's probably wise to continue avoiding him in road matchups, and the upside at home on a start-by-start basis won't be enough to make him appealing outside of deeper leagues.

Koehler pushed his way through his most effective season as a professional in 2014, making 32 starts for the Marlins and going 10-10 with a 3.81 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. He managed to bump his strikeout rate to 19.1%, up from 15.3% during his rookie season while continuing to show average command. He proved to enjoy some good old home cooking last season, working his 92-mph fastball to a 3.00 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 96 innings at Marlins Park. Entering 2015, Koehler will have the inside track to a spot in the back end of the rotation, but he’ll need to perform well to stick over the balance of the season as the team will welcome back ace Jose Fernandez at some point over the summer.

Koehler provided some much-needed innings for the Marlins throughout the 2013 summer, taking the hill for 23 starts and becoming a real asset at the back-end of the rotation while the team constantly attempted to cover for injuries and ineffectiveness. Koehler did a nice job when asked to take the ball every fifth day, working 140 innings and posting a 4.41 ERA and 1.36 WHIP. Koehler is not going to blow anyone away with his low-90s fastball so he'll need to work on lowering the 3.4 BB/9 he posted last season to show continued success against major league hitters. He posted a solid 1.61 GB/FB ratio in 2013, however, and remains in position to pitch his way into the rotation as the Marlins let their crop of young pitchers mature in the minors a little longer.

Koehler made 28 starts for Triple-A New Orleans, posting a 4.17 ERA and 1.42 WHIP to go along with a 12-11 record, prior to getting work in the Marlins' bullpen in September. After a rocky four-run outing in his first appearance, Koehler settled in to allow just one earned run over his next six appearances and was rewarded with a chance to make his first big league start on the last day of the season. Though he was tagged with his first major-league loss on that day, the 26-year-old capped off a solid season that saw him make strides with his command and effectiveness. Koehler will get a chance to earn a spot in the now wide-open Marlins' rotation during spring training, but his upside is limited.
