De Paula was released by the Padres on Friday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
De Paula split time between Double-A and Triple-A, but he consistently failed to find success in El Paso, as he produced a 5.40 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP in 21.2 innings with the Chihuahuas. This stat line will likely make it pretty tough to land a minor-league contract elsewhere, especially given that he's already 26 and still struggles at that level.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2015
2014
De Paula piled up 104 strikeouts in 89 innings while working mostly as a starter at High-A Tampa to begin the season, before he was acquired by the Padres as part of the Chase Headley deal. There are some questions regarding his future as a starter against better competition. Upon arriving in the Padres' organization, De Paula was assigned to High-A Lake Elsinore, where he continued to work as a starter to lesser results in the hitter-friendly California League as he became more prone to the long ball. Even if he can't harness his secondary pitches and ultimately fails to stick as a starter, De Paula has a power arm capable of becoming an asset in a late-inning relief role. He'll turn 24 prior to Opening Day, which may lead the Padres to promote him to Double-A for the start of 2015 even though he failed to dominate before or after the trade last season at a lower level of competition.
De Paula zoomed up the Yankees' prospect rankings starting late in 2012, and while he kept up his dominance with Low-A Charleston in 2013, he hit a roadblock at High-A Tampa, putting up a 6.06 ERA and giving up 54 hits in 49 innings. De Paula features a fastball in the low-to-mid 90s, a biting low-80s breaking ball, and an improving changeup. It's unclear whether the Yankees will challenge the 23-year-old by starting him at Double-A in 2014, but he's pretty clearly the Yankees' top rotation prospect right now, and is worth following as a result.
