Jandel Gustave

Gustave was dumped by the Astros last winter after he lost a couple seasons to elbow trouble, including Tommy John surgery. After building back up in the Giants' minor-league system over the first several months of 2019, Gustave finally returned to the majors late in the season. He was excellent in terms of run prevention with San Francisco, though the estimators were less favorable largely on account of his low 14.1 K%. Gustave is a bit of an enigma in that regard, as he averages 96 mph on his fastball with good spin and his slider shows flashes of being a plus pitch, but he hasn't gotten good whiff rates with the breaking ball and the K-rates have lagged behind what you would expect given his raw stuff. He's now 27 and the swing and miss may never come along, but Gustave at least reestablished his footing in the big leagues and should break camp with a bullpen role, health permitting.

Gustave made his big league debut in August for the Astros and settled in nicely to finish the year with a 3.52 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. Opposing hitters hit just .219 against him over 57 relief innings for Triple-A Fresno -- the best mark of his career at any level. Originally signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2010 as a raw development project, Gustave has polished up his upper-90s fastball nicely to the point where he's looking like a potentially valuable major league asset. He has flirted with striking out a batter per inning at every level he's played and has done a phenomenal job keeping the ball in the yard throughout the minors, allowing only 10 home runs over 300 innings. While he still needs to work on consistently commanding the ball in the zone, Gustave has the stuff to be a mid-to-high leverage reliever, although he won't be in the mix for saves in Houston anytime soon.
