ANALYSIS
Dillard was released by the Rangers at the end of February after signing a minor-league contract during the offseason, and he'll elect to hang up his cleats instead of searching for another deal. The 37-year-old mainly pitched in the minors during his career but spent four seasons in the majors with the Brewers between 2008 and 2012. During that time, the right-hander posted a 4.70 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 62:29 K:BB over 73 relief appearances.

Dillard has bounced around between the majors and Triple-A Nashville for the last four seasons. In 2011 he threw 28.2 innings in Milwaukee, recording a 4.08 ERA with 27 strikeouts to just four walks. The Brewers are looking for bullpen help this offseason so he may get a look during spring training. It's unlikely that he would be on the short list for save opportunities should anything happen to John Axford, however.
Dillard has bounced around between reliever and starter over the last few seasons and hasn't really looked good in either role. His ERA at Triple-A Nashville may look OK, but a 3.9 K/9IP should be a big warning sign. The Brewers may give him a chance to win a role in the bullpen in 2010 or he may get shipped back to Triple-A Nashville and resume his mediocre starter role.
The Brewers converted Dillard to a reliever full time in 2008 and he bounced back with a 1.99 ERA in 63.1 innings for Triple-A Nashville. Some control issues limited his time in Milwaukee, but he could have a decent future as a middle reliever. He has a fair chance at making the Brewers out of spring training in a relief role in 2009.
The Brewers were high on Dillard entering the 2007 season and bumped him up to the Triple-A Nashville rotation only to see him fall back a bit. After posting a 4.74 ERA and just 4.2 K/9IP at Triple-A, the Brewers have acknowledged that his future is in middle relief. He'll start out in the Triple-A bullpen in 2008, but could get a call up to Milwaukee during the season.
Dillard continues to impress in the minors even though he's not considered a top prospect. He posted a 3.15 ERA in 163 IP for Double-A Huntsville, striking out 108 and walking just 36. He's a ground ball pitcher and projects to be more of a middle reliever in the majors, but he could find himself there in a year or two.
