Nabs win Thursday
Akin (1-0) allowed a run on one hit and one walk over 1.1 innings, earning the win Thursday versus the Yankees. He did not record a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Kyle Bradish went 4.2 innings in his return from an elbow injury, failing to qualify for the win. Akin was able to get the last out of the fifth inning, and while he gave up a solo home run to Gleyber Torres in the sixth, the Orioles' lead was never in danger. Akin has been scored on in just three of his 15 appearances this season, pitching to a solid 3.60 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 19:4 K:BB over 15 innings while adding four holds. Akin is serving more as a regular reliever than a multi-inning option in 2024, though the southpaw can handle longer assignments when necessary.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Will remain in rotation
Akin has earned wins in consecutive outings and will remain in the rotation for the remainder of the season, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
The lefty has simplified his game by pitching exclusively from the stretch and it appears to be working, as he's allowed two earned runs with 11 strikeouts in 12 innings over his last two starts. Manager Brandon Hyde said he wants to keep starting Akin to see how he handles the Orioles' strong competition in September, which includes plenty of games against the Red Sox, Blue Jays and Yankees. Akin's 6.90 ERA through 75.2 innings this season is far from pretty, but it's already down from 7.92 a couple weeks ago and will continue improving if he maintains his recent run of success.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2021
2017
Akin's move to the bullpen worked for both player and team in 2022. He covered 81.2 innings in 45 appearances (one start), posting a 3.20 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 77:20 K:BB. Those numbers are very solid for a multi-inning reliever, but that role doesn't lend itself to much fantasy value, as he had just two saves, three holds and a 3-3 record. The southpaw made some strides by keeping the ball down better (average launch angle of 7.9), which trimmed his HR/9 to 1.1. He also cut down his BB/9 to 2.2 from 3.8 a year before, when he worked mainly as a starter. With big-name prospects on the horizon, Akin's unlikely to enter the rotation in 2023 barring a massive bite from the injury bug. In deeper fantasy formats, he may have some appeal as a ratio stabilizer with decent strikeout potential, but the lack of saves won't change.
