Ellison (concussion) is retiring from football.
ANALYSIS
Ellison missed the final six games of 2019 after suffering a concussion in November. He had previously missed Week 17 in 2018 while recovering from concussion symptoms, so it shouldn't come as any surprise to see the 31-year-old tight end choose retirement. The Giants are left with Evan Engram and Kaden Smith at the top of their depth chart, while Ellison finishes his NFL career with 118 catches for 1,189 yards and seven touchdowns in 113 regular-season games. He was mostly known for his run blocking but also displayed flashes of pass-catching ability when Engram missed time with injuries the past few years.

Ellison will be the team's primary blocking tight end, while Evan Engram handles most of the pass-catching duties. Engram has missed six games over his first two seasons, and Ellison has proved useful on occasion - 6-4-77-0 in Week 12 against the Eagles, for example - but even if Engram gets hurt again, Ellison is bye-week filler at best.
Ellison will be the team's primary blocking tight end and could see an occasional target in the red zone, but he's a distant second to Evan Engram in the passing game and isn't likely to have much impact for fantasy purposes.
Signed this offseason as a free agent, Ellison is more of a blocker than pass catcher, but he should help the Giants in a variety of roles. Just don't expect his contributions to show up in the form of fantasy stats.
Ellison suffered a setback during Week 17 of the 2015 season when he tore his patellar tendon, but the Vikings elected to re-sign their 6-foot-5, 250 pound tight end in March of 2016. Recovery from the injury is slated to keep him limited until well into the summer, but he figures to once again make the team and provide blocking in both the pass and run game. In 15 appearances throughout his 2015 campaign, Ellison had 11 catches for 124 yards and a touchdown. With that production, it remains clear that Kyle Rudolph leads the tight end corps in fantasy value by far, with MyCole Pruitt slightly above Ellison as well.
Ellison is almost exclusively a blocking tight end, but did have 19 receptions and a touchdown last year with Kyle Rudolph missing seven games due to injury. Following Rudolph’s return in and the addition of fifth-round pick McCoyle Pruitt to the fold, his upside remains limited heading into 2015.
Ellison is almost exclusively a blocking tight end, but did have five receptions last year after Kyle Rudolph was injured.
Ellison will work as the number three tight end for the Vikings and mainly will be used for blocking in the team's run-first offense.
Ellison, a 2012 fourth-round draft pick, figures to be not much more than a blocking specialist for Minnesota. With John Carlson and Kyle Rudolph around, he's far, far off the fantasy radar.
