Narrowly misses playoff
April 28, 2024
Brehm and Mark Hubbard carded a three-under 69 on Sunday at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans to finish in solo third place.
ANALYSIS
Brehm and Hubbard began the final round two off the lead and had a solid one-under front nine before closing the lead to one after moving to three-under through 14 holes. However, they were unable to birdie any of the final four holes including the closing par-5 18th and came up one shot out of a playoff. It was a surprising week for Brehm, who had missed two straight cuts and had a best finish of T20 on the year.

Brehm broke through in a big way this year, claiming his first career PGA Tour victory at the Puerto Rico Open. While he wasn’t competing against the strongest of fields, he still proved that he can go very low, posting a four-day total of 20-under par. Aside from the lone victory, however, Brehm only made four other cuts on the season and is a candidate for regression next year. The Michigan State grad will need to start making cuts or have another hot week if he hopes to find this spot on the money list at the end of 2023.
The Korn Ferry grad played 17 events and made nine cuts but didn't have so much as a top-30. This was Brehm's second go-round on the PGA Tour and his reults were similar to his first try. Fortunately for Brehm, because of the pandemic, he gets another crack at it. Unfortunately, he likely won't take advantage of the opportunity.
Brehm had dipped as low as No. 1,375 in the Official World Golf Ranking following a missed cut at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Championship in April, but the Michigan State product rapidly ascended back inside of the top 300 late in the Korn Ferry Tour season as he picked up a victory at the LECOM Health Challenge. Brehm tallied nine top-25s and amassed over $250k in official earnings throughout his 2019 campaign, allowing a comfortable position among "The 25" on the KFT. At 6-foot-4, 220, the 33-year-old still harnesses enough power to stay relevant on longer tracks as he ranked 10th in driving distance, 14th in GIR percentage and 12th in birdie average.
Brehm won the Portland Open in late August on the Web.com Tour, sealing his spot on the PGA Tour for 2016-17 after a Web.com Tour campaign that saw him have two thirds and five top-10s in 24 starts. He missed seven cuts in 24 starts and had nine other finishes outside of the top 25. That's probably attributed to his 134th-place ranking in driving accuracy and 58th place in greens in regulation. That has to improve for him to be a better player than the $400K he's pegged for.
